Russell Naugle

Financial Services Representative

Gareth Nicholson At CUA, we pride ourselves on knowing our customers and having customers get to know our staff. We recently sat down with one of our staff members to help you get to know them.

Russell joined the CUA team more than 35 years ago and is currently in the role of Member Services Support Administrative Assistance.

Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I grew up in Eastern Passage and then as an adult moved to Halifax with my partner. This worked out really well as once I lived on this side of the bridge, I was able to transfer from our Pleasant Street Branch (formerly located in Eastern Passage) and join the team at our South Park Street Branch.

Can you highlight your education background and professional experience?
In the 80s, I attended a local college and focused my studies on banking and computers. Throughout my years with CUA, I have also had the privilege of attending many professional developments programs.

What drew you to banking?
Having lived in the community, the staff at the former Eastern Passage Branch encouraged me to apply. Eventually I did and I’ve been a part of the CUA team ever since. In March 2021, I will celebrate my 35-year anniversary with CUA.

Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?
I have held several different positions over the years, mostly in a branch location. For several years I was a Financial Services Representative and then I moved into the role of Branch Administrator at our South Park Street Branch. A few years, I joined the team at our Customer Contact Centre and now you can find me on the Member Services Support team.

What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
I spend my day assisting members over the phone and providing support to the rest of the team. The days are generally very busy, and I have lots to do!

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is getting to help our members out. I always do my best to keep our members happy. Over the years I’ve gotten to know many of them and they have made for a very memorable career.

Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
I’ve learned a lot of things during my tenure at CUA but probably one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is to be a good team player.

What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Make sure that you’re spending within your means, no matter what your income is. Even the little things add up, like making sure that you’re in the right monthly bank account package. Oftentimes, if I notice a member is incurring overages, I’ll reach out to them to see if they would like to switch packages.  They may end up spending a little more each month, but it actually saves them money in the long run because they’re not paying for extra transactions.

Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
I love to swim. During the warm months, you can find me at the beach!

Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc) and if so, what?
During my time working in-branch, I participated in as many organizational activities as I could, from charity fundraisers and events to events supporting our brand awareness efforts.

What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
My favourite meal is a turkey dinner!
