Meet Sanket Mehta

As the Branch Manager at our Wyse Road Branch, Sanket shares his professional experience in marketing and banking, walks us through a regular workday, and shares his love of cooking.

1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I was raised in Gujarat, India, and in 2019 I relocated to Halifax. The allure of Halifax lies in its coastal charm, breathtaking vistas, historical landmarks, and delightful weather, all of which made the city endearing to me. Factors such as its scenic beauty, employment prospects and the welcoming community atmosphere were pivotal in my decision to establish roots in Halifax.

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I obtained my bachelor's degree in science and went on to earn a master's in business administration. Beginning my professional journey as a marketing executive, I progressed steadily to a management position. I embarked on a new chapter in my career within the banking industry when I came to Canada in 2019.

3. What drew you to banking?

From the outset of my professional journey, I've been immersed in handling lending products and financial matters. The realization that financial literacy holds the key to developing a more prosperous society, coupled with the abundant opportunities within the banking industry, influenced my decision to pursue a career in this sector.

4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

I entered CUA in the capacity of a financial advisor in 2021, and most recently I’ve become Branch Manager at the Wyse Road branch.

5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

Typically, my day kicks off with a review of emails, messages, and any updates from the previous evening. I then set the priorities for the day, outlining specific tasks, meetings, and goals. Morning meetings with branch staff follow, where we discuss the day's objectives, address any issues, and ensure clarity on responsibilities. Updates on bank policies, promotions, or procedural changes are communicated through these meetings. As the day concludes, I plan for the next day by setting new priorities and identifying any outstanding tasks.

6. What is the best part of your job?

The most enjoyable aspect of my job is driving business growth for the branch, meeting sales targets, and expanding the membership base.

7. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

A valuable lesson I've learned is the importance of going above and beyond to meet the financial needs of CUA's members. This experience has deepened my understanding of identifying these needs and effectively articulating our products that can best help them in meeting their goals.

8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

A crucial piece of financial advice I always share is to ensure that expenses never exceed income and to consistently track spending.

9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

Outside of work, I spend quality time with my wife and friends by engaging in various activities such as cooking, shopping, and gym sessions. My hobbies include playing chess, swimming, hiking, and staying informed about current real estate market trends. Cooking is my favorite activity, and I enjoy experimenting with various cuisines, including Indian, Chinese, and Thai.

10. Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc.) and if so, what?

I volunteer in organizing cultural events at the Hindu Temple in Halifax.

11. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

My favorite meal is a simple Gujarati Khichdi, a healthy mix of various lentils and rice, often served with curd or pickles. While dining out I often prefer non-Indian cuisine, however, Rasa is definitely my favorite restaurant.
