Meet Lori Buhlman

In this month’s staff profile, Branch Administrator Lori Buhlman tells us about her various roles at CUA and her passion for photography.

1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I grew up in Ontario and first visited Nova Scotia in 2003. I instantly fell in love with the Province; all of its beauty, wildlife and breathtaking landscapes. A few short years later, when my previous employer opened a new location on the East Coast, I was offered the opportunity to permanently call Nova Scotia home.

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I am a graduate of Humber College with a degree in Photography and, prior to finding my place with CUA, I had over 18 years of retail sales and management experience. For nine years, I was an instructor on evenings and weekends teaching photography courses and have been a marathon race photographer for over 16 years and counting.

3. What drew you to banking?

Having a long professional history of striving for customer service excellence and surpassing expectations, the CUA culture of both creative thinking to enhance member experience, and community-based banking where all members are owners, was my draw into the world of banking.

4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

After initially applying for a Financial Service Representative position, I actually began my journey with CUA in a split Financial Advisor/Branch Administrator role. With my previous background in staff support and management, I naturally progressed towards the Branch Administrator role full time.

5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

BUSY! I work closely with various parts of the operations, ranging from our front-line Financial Service Representatives, Customer Contact Centre, Commercial and Financial Advisors, Branch Managers to Corporate Office. I’m always lending a hand whenever it is required and providing guidance wherever it is needed.

6. What is the best part of your job?

The team!!! There is nothing more fulfilling and rewarding then my day-to-day interactions with my coworkers.

7. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

Pursue opportunities where you can in order to learn and grow both personally and professionally. The results will strengthen the connection with our members and our local community.

8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

Understanding the value of a dollar, how to make it grow and work for you. Fortunately, I was taught this as soon as I had my first paper route and those lessons have resulted in financial security.

9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I am a long-time member of the Nova Scotia Bird Society and spend almost all of my free time surrounded by the outdoors. Whether it is hiking, running, kayaking, swimming or working in my vegetable garden, I can always be found immersed in nature.

10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

I LOVE to cook!!! I enjoy experimenting and exploring flavours and combinations from all over the world and will try anything once.
