Meet Corey Bowes

Commercial Account Manager

Corey BowesAt CUA, we pride ourselves on knowing our customers and having customers get to know our staff, including those who look after the day-to-day operations. We recently sat down with one of our Commercial Account Managers to help you get to know him as well.

Corey Bowes joined CUA in 2017 as a Commercial Account Manager. He brings years over 20 years of industry experience and a strong passion for helping others reach their financial goals.

Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I grew up in and around Halifax, and then after university I moved to Moncton for work. In 2015, my wife and I made the decision to move back home. We purchased a home in Peggy’s Cove, where we live with our daughter.

Can you highlight your education background and professional experience?
From a young age I was entrepreneurial, and this passion drew me to business school. I completed my BBA at Acadia and then an MBA at Dalhousie.

I worked for three years at a bank before joining a credit union. I worked there for 15 years and held multiple roles including Commercial Account Manager, Commercial Manager, and Chief Operating Officer.

When I moved back to Halifax, I spent two years with another financial institution in a commercial role before joining CUA.

What drew you to banking?
After my studies, I found myself drawn to commercial banking because I saw it as an opportunity to follow my passion and foster entrepreneurship by helping businesses grow and reach their goals.

What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
Even on a regular workday a lot goes on. Usually I will be working on one or two credit applications, completing annual reviews for members in my portfolio and speaking with clients and mortgage brokers regarding new loan and mortgage requests.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part of the job is helping entrepreneurs start their business or taking their business to the next step by achieving financial success.

I also love visiting my clients at their businesses, they are always proud to show what they’ve built, and it’s rewarding to see how far they’ve come.

Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
Over the course of my career, I’ve learned the importance of teamwork. At CUA, we have a great team, by working together we’re able to grow our business – which in turn helps many other businesses.

What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Do your homework before making any investment. Know what you’re getting into and be conservative in your plans. Be optimistic but be prepared for anything.

Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
Traveling internationally, going to concerts and sporting events when it’s safe to do so. For now, it’s local travel and enjoying all that Nova Scotia has to offer.

Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc.) and if so, what?
I was fortunate to be a part of the Peggy’s Cove Project Working Group with Develop Nova Scotia, in the lead-up to the current community upgrades.

What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
We like to make our own pizzas at home, and at restaurants it’s usually pasta or burgers.
