ICU Service Change

Effective August 16, 2024, the existing Inter Credit Union (ICU) service is no longer available to CUA members as CUA will be on an improved IT system, which is different than the system used by other credit unions in Atlantic Canada. You will still be able to do over-the-counter transactions at CUA branch locations and also carry out transactions using an ATM at any credit union in Atlantic Canada as well as ATMs nationally through the “ding-free” ATM network.  This network includes 66 locations in Nova Scotia and over 5,000 across the country. Currently, credit union members in Atlantic Canada can go into a branch of another credit union and carry out certain banking transactions at the counter.

This change affects a very small number of CUA’s members. Approximately 200 members (less than 1% of the total membership) used this service six times or more in the last year.  For the majority of these members, there are other convenient ways to do these transactions, including using the ATMs, online banking, the mobile banking app and telephone banking.

Questions and Answers

What is a core banking system? Expand/Collapse

A core banking system is used by banking institutions to process their customer’s banking transactions, manage loans and interest calculations and post updates to accounts and financial records. It includes all account-related information for members or customers.

What is the ICU service? Expand/Collapse

The Inter Credit Union (ICU) service allows members of Atlantic Canadian credit unions to perform certain transactions at the counter (with a teller) of another credit union in the region, as if it were your own home branch. These transactions are typically cash and cheque deposits, withdrawals and sometimes transfers between accounts, bill payments and bill exchanges for coins.

Why is the service no longer available? Expand/Collapse

On August 16, 2024, CUA will be moving to a new core banking system. This will allow us to improve our overall service for our members, including faster service (through streamlined processes and removal of duplicated information), enhanced security (including biometrics and scannable IDs) and more personalized products (through a member-centric model, rather than the current product-centric model).   CUA will be on another system than other credit unions in Atlantic Canada and these systems are not connected.  As a result, other credit unions will not be able to update the members’ account information and carry out these transactions.

What types of transactions will this impact? Expand/Collapse

The most common ICU transactions are deposits and withdrawals.  In addition, there is also bill payments and currency exchange between coins and bills.

Can I still use the ATM at other credit unions? Expand/Collapse

Yes! You will still be able to perform transactions such as deposits, withdrawals and transfers between accounts at any credit union ATM in the region, without any surcharges. You can find the ATM that’s closest to you by searching our “ding-free” network, a national network of fee-free ATMs which includes 66 locations in Nova scotia and over 5,000 across Canada.

Will this have any impact on the transactions I perform with online or mobile banking? Expand/Collapse

No! This does not impact online or mobile banking.  It only affects doing a transaction in a branch of another credit union in Atlantic Canada.
