With the Holidays just weeks away, and festive cheer in the air, it’s likely you’re making your to-do list and checking it twice. Part of that to-do list may be trimming – not just your tree – but your budget when it comes to Holiday spending. From family gatherings and travelling, to gifts and groceries, the most wonderful time of the year can be expensive. In fact, groceries are a top expense for many families during the Holidays. That's why we’re excited to share some tips for cutting back on the cost of food, so you can set yourself up for financial success in the New Year:
Consider hosting a potluck: No matter the time of year, hosting a potluck can take a great deal of the cost (and pressure!) off your shoulders. By taking care of the turkey or ham, and having guests bring the side dishes and desserts, this can help offset the costs of a traditional Holiday spread.
Plan around seasonal ingredients: By choosing to make meals with ingredients that are in-season and easily accessible, you can spend less money and time at the grocery store. Ingredients such as sweet potato, zucchini, winter squash and cranberries are cheaper at this time of year and are versatile ingredients to use in your go-to, family favourite recipes.
Stock up on sale items: During your next trip to the grocery store, look for sales and special deals on the essential, non-perishable items you know you’ll need. This may include canned goods, flour, sugar and chocolate – ideal ingredients for baking this time of year! You’ll keep the pantry well-stocked for the Holidays and perhaps a few months afterwards.
Utilize leftovers: You can easily stretch your Holiday grocery budget by reusing leftovers from your meals. Leftover turkey or ham, for example, can be used in many meals, including turkey sandwiches, soup or casseroles, while leftover vegetables can be used in a variety of dishes.
