Falling In Love With Your Small Business All Over Again

Starting a business is exhilarating. You take special care of the details and you celebrate every milestone as your small business grows and thrives, delighting customers and making an impact on the Nova Scotian economy. Your business is making our community better, and that's something to be proud of. Running a business is as tough as it is rewarding.

Our team often meets with our business customers when things aren't so shiny and new, when things get complicated for any number of good reasons. And although the focus on growth is front and centre, the numbers can sometimes overshadow the real magic happening between what you've created and your loyal customers. If you've been struggling to find a balance between working on your business and working in your business, take a step back to see your work in action.

As the visionary behind your business, focus on seeing it through fresh eyes. Connect directly with your customers and they'll remind you why your business brings value to their life and community. Invite your loyal customers to a special event where you can ask them questions to help inform your business decisions and future direction.

Go all the way back to read your original business plan. Find photos from when you started, and celebrate how far you've come. Talk to your employees about what your business has meant to them. More importantly, make sure they know the impact they are having on your business. Your business and its future rests on people, starting with you. Engage your team and your supporters to identify a new idea - a spark to start the year. If you're fresh out of ideas, consider CUA's Community Partners Program. We'll work to connect you to our growing membership, through social media and our regular communications.

Most importantly, take care of yourself. If you love working in the business, consider the potential value of hiring outside expertise to help you get back to doing more of what you love. And when all else fails, consider going for a float. Halifax's Floatation Centre, also a CUA member and Community Partner, offers therapeutic floatation services to melt stresses away. CUA members also receive 15% off regularly priced float sessions!
