Meet Tharushi Muthuhara

As a Financial Advisor at our Civic Branch, Tharushi tells us about the importance of saving and investing, thinking outside the box and her shoe collection.

1. Where did you grow up, and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I was born and raised in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and I moved to Halifax in January 2023 to join my husband here.

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I received my Bachelor of Science in Computing from Wrexham Glyndwr University in Wales, United Kingdom. I then spent nearly five years working in the banking industry in Sri Lanka.

3. What drew you to banking?

Right after high school, I joined a bank as an intern. While working, I started to understand what banking really is, as well as the positive impact banks can have on people and the economy. That’s where my interest began.

4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

I joined CUA as a Financial Advisor, and that is my current role.

5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

I usually start my day with various reports and begin assisting the Financial Services Representatives. The most important part of my role is fulfilling the financial requirements of our members. Then I’ll finish the day off by preparing for the next morning’s meetings.

6. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is that I learn something new everyday!

7. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

The importance of thinking outside the box to make things happen—sometimes you need to find a creative solution to help a member with their request.

8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

The earlier you start saving and investing, the better; but it’s never too late to start putting away funds for your future.

9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

Ideally, I love to spend any leisure time on a sandy beach. Collecting shoes, particularly high heels, is my main hobby outside of work.

10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

I’m not a very good cook, but I love to order Italian food from a restaurant.
