1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I am a proud Haligonian, born and raised in the City. I love Halifax, it has everything a big city has to offer but in a smaller scale. It’s a wonderful place to raise a family.
2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?
I graduated from Dalhousie University with a Bachelor of Commerce degree and went on to obtain my Personal Financial Planning designation. I have worked in the financial services industry for almost 40 years. During this time, I have worked in credit unions, life insurance, and trust and beneficiaries.
3. What drew you to banking?
I was drawn to banking because I liked the idea of helping people with their finances. I pursued my financial planning designation so I would be able uncover people’s financial needs and recommend solutions to help them achieve their financial goals.
4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?
I started as a financial planner in the wealth management side of CUA and then transitioned to work as an advisor. I am currently a Financial Advisor at our Annex Branch.
5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
I start the day reading and returning emails and phone calls. I prioritize my files for the day and prepare for all the appointments that are booked.
6. What is the best part of your job?
I enjoy meeting and working with people. I take great pride when we can help members achieve their goals, like buying their first home or investing their savings.
7. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
I have learned that it is very important to listen to what members have to say. Sometimes you need to ask probing questions to uncover what their needs are. I love working with members to find the right products and services to achieve their financial goals.
8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
It is important to look after your finances and to take care of what you have acquired. A key part of financial health that gets overlooked is planning ahead. Everyone should make a will to reflect their life’s wishes and protect their family. A will can communicate how you want your property and assets to be distributed. Additionally, you can protect your family from the burden of debt if you get creditor insurance.
9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
Family is very important to me. My father is in his nineties and my grandson was born during the pandemic. Life is very precious and outside of my professional life, I like to spend my time with my family and close friends.
10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
I love seafood, so some of my favorites are lobsters, clams, shrimp, scallops, mussels and abalone. I enjoy having them prepared in Chinese dishes where they are cooked with lots of spices and seasonings to make them flavourful and delicious.
