Meet Michelle Taylor

In this month’s staff profile, Michelle tells us about her extensive career in the financial sector, and what she loves about her role as a Financial Services Representative at CUA.

1. Where did you grow up, and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I was born in Halifax and have lived here my entire life!

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I attended SMU and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. I have worked in the Financial Services industry for over 30 years. My first job was as a teller at another financial institution; I moved on to become what they referred to as a “GIC and Funds Officer” selling and advising on GICs and mutual fund investments.

After that, I got a job as an Account Manager at another institution, where I stayed in a variety of roles for over 20 years.

I took some time off and eventually came back to work at CUA as a Financial Services Representative (FSR) in 2018. About six months ago, I moved into the Customer Contact Centre at CUA.

3. What drew you to banking?

When I graduated university, I had an interest in finance and I saw an opening for a teller position. It was a great way to get my foot in the door and I’ve enjoyed various positions within the banking industry ever since.

4. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

In my current role, my hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. which I absolutely love. It gives me a lot of time in the morning to get out and take my dog for a walk and do a few errands before work if need be.

I get in to work around 9:45 to get ready for the day. At 10 a.m. I start accepting member calls. Throughout the day, I help our members on the phone as well as through Live Chat and email. The day is busy and passes quickly and I truly enjoy it. Members are appreciative and a pleasure to deal with.

5. What is the best part of your job?

I enjoy interacting with the members and I have so many friends at CUA that I love to see and talk to each day. My hours afford me a day-to-day lifestyle that is perfect for me.

6. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

I have honestly learned so much since being with CUA. The focus on our members is so refreshing to me coming from a larger bank. CUA offers a wonderful experience for its members as well as for the staff!

7. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

Start saving money as soon as you start your first job. Retirement may seem so far away, but time passes quickly and the earlier you start saving, the better off you will be in the long run.

8. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I love to spend time with my husband and my dog, Ozzy. We have a large extended family and time with them is very important to me. I also love to read and watch movies.

9. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

My husband does all the cooking and honestly, he always does a great job; I like everything he makes for us. My favourite meal would be anything with shrimp or scallops as the main ingredient.
