Meet Meet Akhila

As a Financial Advisor at our Pleasant Street Branch, Akhila tells us about his path to CUA, the satisfaction of helping members find solutions, and his love for trying new recipes.

1) Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I grew up in Sri Lanka. I came to Halifax in 2014 as a student to attend Dalhousie University. I have lived in Halifax since then and I fell in love with this vibrant city.

2) Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I completed an associate degree in Sri Lanka and received a diploma in Engineering from Dalhousie in 2017. I worked in food service for eight years and was a restaurant manager before I made the switch to banking.

3) What drew you to banking?

A career in banking attracted me as I have always been interested in working in the financial sector, and it presented me with the opportunity of using my experience in sales and management to forge a rewarding career.

4) Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

I have been a Financial Advisor since I joined the organization, which is a multi-faceted role that I have really enjoyed.

5) What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

Typically, I spend my day meeting with members to help them with their banking needs. Between appointments, I complete administrative tasks and handle various situations as they arise. We have a great team at my branch, so we like to crack jokes when we have a free moment.

6) What is the best part of your job?

You cannot beat the feeling of satisfaction you get when you help a member find the best solution to a problem they had. Knowing you have been a part of a process that made a difference in someone’s life is amazing.

7) Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

I have learned that a financial solution is not only about a dollar value, but also about the service you provide, and the quality of human interaction counts a lot more than you imagine.

8) What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

Saving money is important. I think everyone should try to do it, regardless of the amount or the frequency, because saving can be the start of a successful financial journey.

9) Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I love playing cricket with my friends in the summer. I also enjoy cooking and trying new recipes or reading a new book on my time off.

10) Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc.) and if so, what?

I take part in various community events organized by the Sri Lankan community. From celebrating the culture in the form of Sri Lankan New Year fest and Christmas or coming together for a sporting event such as the annual cricket tournament.

11) What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

I love cooking different recipes as a hobby. I particularly enjoy making a chicken alfredo linguine at home, or burgers with fries and a milkshake if I’m at a restaurant – you can never go wrong with that!
