Meet Mary Britten

As the Branch Administrator at our Annex Branch, Mary tells us about growing up in New Brunswick, spending time with family, and the importance of an emergency fund for life’s surprises.

1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I grew up in New Brunswick. I met my now-husband there who was visiting mutual friends, and we have been married for 35 years.

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I started with one of the chartered banks right out of high school in Moncton, NB. I followed my husband to Halifax, worked with another bank for eight years, took a 10-year break to raise my two boys, and have been with CUA for 20 years this year.

3. What drew you to banking?

It was an opportunity to gain financial knowledge and to share that knowledge with others.

4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

I’ve held the positions of Financial Services Representative, Branch Administrator, Customer Contact Centre representative and Member Services Support before moving back in the Branch Administrator role, which is what I’m doing now.

5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

My workday starts at 7:30 a.m. I respond to emails, prepare reports, attend meetings when necessary, and work on estate intakes.

6. What is the best part of your job?

The administration side of my role is what I enjoy the most. This is when I prepare reports and learn what I can about different parts of the operations.

7. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

I’ve learned to trust my own judgement and that respect for coworkers makes a team work successfully.

8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

I think everyone should have an emergency fund to prepare for life’s surprises.

9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I love spending time with friends and family, especially my three-month-old grandson.

10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

Anything curry!!
