1) Where did you grow up? If you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I grew up in Trinidad & Tobago. I moved to Halifax to attend Saint Mary's University (SMU), but I stayed because of the city’s history, university population, proximity to ocean and beaches (later to find out how freezing cold the water is year-round) and the balance between big city and small-town vibes.
2) Can you highlight your education background and professional experience?
Before moving to Canada, I completed an Associate Degree in Information Technology. I then completed a Bachelor of Science with a Major in Psychology at SMU. Before entering the banking industry, I focused a lot of my professional endeavors in the non-profit sector working with youth and managing community programs.
3) What drew you to banking?
In my previous line of work, I became particularly interested in providing financial assistance to those I served—whether it be helping a youth get a bank account and learn how to save, or helping a new immigrant learn about finances here in Canada; or managing projects, budgets, and disbursement of funds. I was drawn to CUA because it is more than just banking, it’s providing education and genuine care to members; doing whatever we can to help them, regardless of their situation.
4) Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?
Since joining CUA, I have only held the position of Financial Advisor, however I have been unofficially labeled as tech support, maintenance crew, and everything in between.
5) What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
A regular day for me involves a mix of in-person and phone appointments, coupled with administrative tasks, supporting our Financial Service Representatives, processing applications, socializing with members who just want to say hi, fostering some friendly banter between coworkers, all while enjoying an Oreo Iced Capp.
6) What is the best part of your job?
The Oreo Iced Capp! Just kidding. The best part of the job is the feeling you get when you provide a service to a member and you can tell, just by how grateful they are, that you made a huge difference in their lives.
7) Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
I think the most valuable thing I have learned is to tackle requests from members from all angles. Sometimes the best way to achieve a goal isn’t what the member first had in mind, so it’s important to recognize that and provide the best advice relative to their specific needs.
8) What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Learn to save—put money aside and do not use it, then have that money work for you. Learning to save is the first step to financial discipline.
9) Outside of your professional life, what is your favorite activity or hobby?
When I’m not at work I like to play soccer, basketball, and video games as well as spend time with my family.
10) Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc.) and if so, what?
I have spent about 17 years working in the non-profit industry, supporting youth programs, residential facilities for youth in care, community programs, as well as coaching girls’ basketball.
11) What is your favorite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
I love all food; it's my weakness, but if I had to choose, I would say a good "Trini" roti with curried chicken, duck, or goat, with curried chickpeas and potatoes and some spicy hot sauce on the side.
