Meet Ella Brown

Ella has been a member of the CUA team for over 29 years and has held various positions within the organization. She is currently in the role of Account Manager at our Civic Branch.

1. Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I was born in Stephenville, Newfoundland and have lived in various towns and cities in Newfoundland—including Wabush, Labrador.

2. Can you highlight your education background and professional experience?

I have been working in the financial industry for over 30 years.

I have community college degree in Computerized Accounting, several Dalhousie University courses pertaining to financial services, mutual funds certificate and Dale Carnegie courses

3. What drew you to banking?

The people! I had close friends who worked in the industry and they recommended that it would be a good fit for me. I love helping people achieve their goals.

4. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

Every day is different for me. But I would say a "typical" workday for me is working on applications or resolving our members' issues. I also enjoy visiting some of our members at their business (when and where it’s safe to do so) to understand firsthand what their plans are for the future in terms of growth and development.

5. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

I have had a number of roles within CUA, all of which have helped me be better in my current role. I first started as a teller and then worked my way up to supervising of lending and now as an account manager.

6. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

On a typical day, I meet with clients and discuss their situation and create financial plans that fit their lifestyle and goals. There are lots of other things within the branch that also keep me busy and I enjoy supporting the team where I can.

7. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of the job is seeing clients meet their financial goals. It’s not always easy asking for help, but you’d be surprised how a simple question can lead to reaching your goal.

8. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

That knowledge is power—there is no such thing as one size fits all. It’s important to discuss all your options and decide what is best for you.

9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I love spending time with my granddaughter, and I enjoy going for long walks.

10. Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc) and if so, what?

I am chair of the Atlantic Marion Gathering Group and I also co-chair a group called Hearts A Fire—both Catholic organizations, and I am on the finance committee for Christ the King Parish.

11. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

My favourite meal is Chinese food. What I love the most is that I don’t have to make it!
