1. Where did you grow up, and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I grew up in Lower Sackville and moved to the city in 2011. I regularly made commutes into downtown Halifax when I was younger for concerts, shows and art festivals, so as soon as I was able to do so, I moved to the City to be closer to those events.
2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?
I attended St. Thomas University in Fredericton for a year after high school before deciding that it wasn’t for me. Financially I couldn’t afford to continue, and a large student loan wasn’t the right choice for me. Returning to Halifax I immediately entered the workforce where I gained the life experience and skill set that led me to where I am today. Prior to beginning with CUA, I worked in various positions in banking, insurance, wealth management and leadership.
3. What drew you to banking?
Banking and finances were not something I was taught about at home or in school so when I began working full-time, I didn’t know how to budget or save. I made an appointment with my financial institution at the time and during my appointment, I discovered they were hiring. Teaching has always been a passion of mine, so I saw this as an opportunity to aid those in a similar situation to my own. I began working in the financial industry in 2017 and have been a part of it ever since.
4. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?
I began with CUA as a Financial Advisor in 2021 and have had the opportunity to work in two branches since that time. I am looking forward to growing both professionally and personally.
5. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
A regular workday seldom exists in my role, though currently conversations around budgeting and planning for the future are becoming more common. Given both high interest rates and inflation, the members I am working with are looking to create security for their futures. As their financial advisor, my job is to be adaptable to our members’ needs. What’s regular this week may not be regular next week. A regular workday depends on whatever our members need.
6. What is the best part of your job?
The best part of my job is seeing our members reach their goals, whether they are short-term or long-term. When you help someone create a plan to reach their goals and those goals are met, it takes me back to the reason I began working in banking: to help people understand and take control of their finances.
7. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
The most valuable thing I’ve learned since joining CUA is that banking is for everyone. A lot of people I encounter seem to have the impression that if you do not have significant amounts of money there are no services a bank can provide you. Regardless of where you are financially, we are always here to help. Some people just need advice and our advice is always free.
8. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Review your financial goals regularly. As we grow within our careers and personal lives, our needs change. Reviewing your goals regularly allows you to make adjustments to stay on track. If you need help making changes to meet your goals, reach out to your financial advisor. We have tools, resources and products available to help meet what ever your needs may be.
9. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
My favourite hobby is music. I play in two active bands and have released three records since 2014.
10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
Coming from an Italian family, pasta has always been my favorite. I pride myself on my carbonara, but I also enjoy my “soup Sunday” tradition in the colder months. When eating out, I usually seek out fresh sushi or noodle dishes.
