Meet Angela McClement

In this month’s staff profile, Angela tells us about her role as a Small Business Advisor and her love of song writing.

1. Where did you grow up, and can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?

I grew up on the South Shore in Hubbards. From there I studied Humanities, Theology and Music in the United States for two and a half years in my early twenties, and I was a nanny in between school years. Upon my return to Canada, I started working at another financial institution, with which I had a 20-year career working in various roles within retail and over 16 years within the Commercial segment. I have been with CUA now for over a year.

2. What drew you to banking?

I had always loved working in an office environment and working with the public, and I had many friends working in banking who loved the culture. I joined for the same journey and really felt it was the best niche for me.

3. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

Prior to my Small Business Advisor role, I held the Commercial Administrative Assistant position.

4. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

Mornings tend to be a flurry, generally working on time sensitive reports, responding to urgent emails and requests and attending team meetings. If we have no meetings, I’m usually working on a credit application or in discussion with our members regarding their business needs.

5. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job is the daily interaction I have with my colleagues and our members.

6. Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?

Teamwork and work culture are most important, and I believe that makes for a very happy career within an organization.

7. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

I always recommend paying yourself first! This is a great way to save for the future.

8. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

I am a singer/songwriter and professional recording artist, so my absolute favourite way to spend my spare time is performing and engaging in Halifax social events.

9. Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc.) and if so, what?

Performing at major city events and festivals has been something I have enjoyed over the years.

10. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

My favourite family meal would most likely be Pancetta Pea Pasta. It’s quick to throw together with lots of garlic and parmesan cheese and is certainly a family favourite!
