Meet Tracy Melchoir

Financial Services Representative

At CUA, we pride ourselves on knowing our customers and having customers get to know our staff. We recently sat down with one of our staff members to help you get to know them.

Tracy joined the CUA team in 1996 and is currently in the role of Financial Services Representative at our Wyse Road Branch.

Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?
I was born in Halifax, but I grew up in Dartmouth, where my family and I live today.

Can you highlight your education background?
I studied at Dalhousie and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Earth Sciences. Through my education, I developed strong problem-solving and interpersonal skills.

What drew you to banking?
Throughout high school and university, I worked part-time in customer service. When the role for CUA came up, I thought it would be interesting and a great opportunity to learn some money management skills. Although customer service can mean different things in different industries, it all comes down to the same set of basic skills; listening to customers, having empathy and willingness to improve.

Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?
When I first joined CUA in 1996, I started as a Financial Services Representative and then moved into a Branch Administrator role. I left CUA in 2002 to stay at home with my two sons. I re-entered the workforce in 2015 and came back as a Financial Services Representative at our Wyse Road Branch.

What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
On a typical day, I perform financial transactions for members and answer any questions or inquiries. Since I deal with people directly, I would say no two days are exactly alike, you never know what needs our customers will have – that’s what I love about my role.

What is the best part of your job?
The best part about my job is being part of a team that provides exceptional service to our members. It’s easy to come to work every day when you’re proud of what your team is accomplishing.

Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
The most valuable thing I’ve learned is to have compassion for others. You never know what someone is dealing with or if they’re going through a difficult time. A little kindness can go a long way.

What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Make a budget and try to stick to it. Using a budget will help with paying your bills on time and creating savings so you can get the most out of your money. CUA offers some great resources on budgeting, including this great template for prioritizing financial goals.

Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
I’m a social person and outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family and friends – there’s a reason I work in customer service!

What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
I love Thai food! Either cooking it at home or ordering it from a restaurant.
