Meet Rose Wessel

Financial Advisor

At CUA, we pride ourselves on knowing our customers and having customers get to know our staff, including those who look after the day-to-day operations of our branches. We recently sat down with one of our staff members to help you get to know them as well.

Rose Wessel has had an extensive career with CUA and is currently a Financial Advisor at our Wyse Road branch.

1.
Where did you grow up and if you moved to the Halifax area, what brought you here?

I was born in Bathurst, New Brunswick. My family moved to Halifax when I was two years old, and all of my younger years were spent growing up in the North End. At age 19 I moved to Windsor, Ontario, and after nine years I returned to Nova Scotia. I have never looked back or wanted to live anywhere else!

2. Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience? What drew you to banking?

I was introduced to CUA by my father who was a long-standing member. He asked the branch manager if they were hiring, and after a quick interview I was hired. I was provided with lots of on-the-job training and took many courses that were available to the staff.

3. Since joining CUA, what other positions have you held?

In the 45 years I have been with CUA I have worked in various positions, including as a receptionist, an accounting clerk, a registered plans administrator, a branch administrator/head teller, and a financial advisor.

4. What does a “regular” workday look like for you?

A regular day for me generally starts with a with a quick meeting with my coworkers.  Then I meet and help my clients with their various requests. Before long there is always a friendly face that will come through the doors who is ready for a chat and a few laughs, and that’s what I call the perfect day!

5. What is the best part of your job?

The best part of my job has always been the clients and the relationships that develop between us. There is a lot of satisfaction knowing that you have done your best for someone. I currently visit a client who is now in a retirement home; I considered him not only a client but a very dear friend, as I have known him since 1977. Secondly, there is the staff. I have met so many wonderful people over the years, and some have remained lifelong friends.

6. What is one piece of financial advice that you believe everyone should follow?

I have three pieces of advice to offer:

1) For the parents of small children, introduce them to CUA and have them open a savings account. It doesn’t have to be much, just get them in the habit of putting a few dollars in an account.

2) If you haven’t done so, put money in a savings account or TFSA for a rainy day. Again, it does not have to be a lot; you should just get in the habit of saving.

3) Finally, if you have not done so, review your accounts to make sure they have current information and that your affairs are in order. Update your beneficiaries and maximize your TFSA contributions yearly.

7. Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?

When I am not working, I really enjoy spending time with family and friends. Aside from my two children, I have two granddaughters who are growing up very fast. Any day spent with them is a good day. I am also in touch with current and past coworkers; we not only enjoy each others’ company, but also a good game of SkipBo or Rummoli, or sometimes just food and wine.

8. What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?

Anyone who truly knows me knows that I like being around people and entertaining, so I am always up for cooking a new recipe. I really don’t have a favorite food because I want to keep my options opened. I will try a new dish at least once!
