Can you highlight your education background and professional experience?
I have always been drawn to helping people develop their knowledge and skills and planned to be a science teacher. When we moved to the Netherlands, I had completed a BSc, BEd and a Master of Environmental Studies. I taught for eight years at an international private school in The Hague and loved it! I had the opportunity to experience leading student government, a service trip to Tanzania, and work as a Sustainability Coordinator. Through my work as a teacher, I discovered I had a natural entrepreneurial spirit. In preparation for moving back to Canada, I left teaching and found an opportunity to start a business in coaching high potential women in a corporate environment. This business took off, and while we’d already decided to move back, I was not ready to leave this business behind.

What drew you to banking?
After moving back to Canada, I started networking to see if continuing my Dutch business was viable in the Halifax market. I met with an executive at a bank to see if there was opportunity for me to deliver coaching to them, and she ended up offering me a job. At this point I realized I’d have to travel to larger cities if I wanted to continue my business. Although I was new to banking, I understood that my life and professional experiences would be a match, so I took the plunge and have no regrets! I started in a branch as a Banking Advisor and have since worked as a Financial Advisor, Manager Delegate, Enablement Coach and Team Manager.

What does a “regular” workday look like for you?
Everyday is different but I’m certainly learning the ropes as a leader. My focus is on building team routines to support both the South Park Street and Spryfield branches through coaching, meetings and skill building. I am also being mentored by two other CUA branch managers and am connecting with other colleagues as the opportunities arise. I’m enjoying meeting our external partners, including our insurance partners, and building community relationships for each branch.

What is the best part of your job?
The teams – learning what energizes and motivates everyone is an exciting part of my job and using our strengths to build on collective success. I love serving members, and I was worried when I moved to leadership that I’d miss the day-to-day conversations but have realized that I can make a big impact on members’ lives through my incredible teams.

Since being in your role with CUA, what is the most valuable thing you’ve learned?
Since joining CUA as Branch Manager in April 2021, I’ve been struck by how down to earth, intelligent, hard-working, and warm the staff are. I’ve learned the lengths that my colleagues go to take care of members and it is really a testament to CUA and I’m proud to be a part of this organization.

What is one piece of personal finance advice that you believe everyone should follow?
Pay yourself first (this applies to life as well!).

Outside of your professional life, what is your favourite activity or hobby?
I love hiking, biking, playing with my kids and hubby, and kayaking on Kearney Lake.

Do you perform volunteer or community work (boards, committees, sports, etc) and if so, what?
I currently work with the Rotary of Halifax North West and the Spryfield Business Commission. I’ve volunteered ever since I was a kid and love being part of a community that gives back.

What is your favourite meal to cook at home or order at a restaurant?
My favourite meals to make are Mediterranean – couscous, orzo, peppers, fennel, vinaigrette, herbs, feta cheese, pine nuts, etc. But if I’m ordering in, I’ll go for Sushi or Ethiopian Engera or Tabouleh. Yum!
