Meet Jim Copeland

At CUA, we pride ourselves on knowing our customers and having customers get to know our staff. We recently sat down with a member of our Member Services Delivery Team to help you get to know them.

Where did you grow up and, if not in Nova Scotia, what brought you here?
I was born in Ottawa but moved to the Maritimes at a young age. I grew up in a Military family and moved around a lot, but I spent most of my early years in CFB Greenwood. I attended University in New Brunswick and travelled around after graduating. In 2008, my family and I moved back to Halifax from Windsor, Ontario.

Can you highlight your educational background and professional experience?
I am a proud Mountie and graduated with a Bachelor of Commerce from Mount Allison University.

I’m a career banker and have been working in the financial services industry for over 25 years, primarily in Retail Banking. It was a big change when I joined CUA in 2019, and it’s been refreshing working for an organization that is based in Halifax and focused on Nova Scotians.

What drew you to CUA?
I love helping people succeed, both my team, and our clients.
After working at “big banks” for my entire career, the opportunity to work at a locally based financial institution was intriguing. Decisions are made here in Nova Scotia in the best interests of our members and there is a strong commitment to our community.

What is the best part of your job?
As a lead for the branch operations, it’s my job to bring out the best in my teams. I work with a number of outstanding branch managers and corporate office subject matter experts who are dedicated to our members’ financial well being. It’s a true pleasure to work with them.

How would you describe your management style?
I try hard to be a strong listener and always think about how decisions impact both members and our staff. I believe firmly in the value of coaching and trying to add value in all my interactions to help my team perform.

Outside of your professional life, what are some activities or hobbies you enjoy?
Outside of work, I love spending time with my family. I also like a wide variety of sports and a lot of time is consumed by playing and watching games. I’m most passionate about golf and hockey, despite being a long-suffering Leafs fan. I also enjoy volunteering and coaching minor hockey.
