Going to college or university is both an investment in the future and a lesson in personal finance. Students heading back to school across Nova Scotia this month understand how quickly tuition, books and everyday necessities can add up. 

On September 8th, CUA hosted its fifth annual $10k in a Day student giveaway, an event during which CUA gives back to our student community in Nova Scotia by contributing $10,000 towards post-secondary tuition.

During the weeks leading up to the start of the new semester, students were invited to complete an online ballot for a chance to win one of the ten $1,000 tuition prizes. The giveaway saw a wonderful response, with nearly 1,600 students participating in the online ballot draw before the contest closed on September 8th.

Ten winners, studying subjects such as screen arts, biochemistry, accounting and education, were selected on September 9th and each awarded a $1,000 cheque.

Having promoted the event across campuses and on social media, CUA’s team felt confident that word of the giveaway had spread across student bodies. At CUA, we always strive to deliver a ‘wow’ banking experience. To generate excitement as students returned to campus, and to ensure we didn’t miss any potential entrants, we surprised an additional five students with $500 each to go towards their tuition or campus bookstore purchases.

Early on September 8th, our Better Way Street Team began visiting students at five campuses: NSCC, Mount Saint Vincent University, NASCAD, Dalhousie University and Saint Mary’s University. With our raffle drum in tow, CUA hosted on-the-spot giveaways where students had the chance to win big at the end of the hour that the team spent on each campus.

Our team had the pleasure of interacting with all of the students who entered in the on-campus raffles (and texting the good news to the five lucky winners whose names were drawn!)
